If it helps any, they were talking about this last night/this morning on Coast to Coast AM with Richard C Hoagland (their scheduled guest had phone issues). According to Hoagland, if something went wrong, we most likely wouldn't know about it for another 4 years.
And no, this isn't what the Mayan calendar predicted.

I keep hearing the REM song in my head when I read the title of this thread:
'It's the end of the world as we know it..." Weren't they singing that song in the sound track of "ID4"?

WOW!
That is one freaky machine. It's almost as crazy trying to imagine the intelligence of the people involved in it's development. Truly amazing. Thanks, JJ!

More talk about CERN last night. The first hour guest (one of those seeking an injunction against CERN's powering up) says that most likely September 10th is going to be a minor power-up, followed by a big party to celebrate that it's been powered up.
In other words, those scientists are going to party like it's on sale for 19.99.

blog.wired.com/geekdad/2008/09/the-large-hadro.htmlThere is also a good article in Scientific American: www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-discovery-machine-hadron-colliderwww.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=how-lhc-may-change-internetReally, guys - this is a very exciting thing - not scary! It's all about the search for the Higgs Boson, which is the only particle predicted by standard model of particle physics which has not been observed. It could help improve understanding of weak forces, such as gravity (yes - gravity is considered a weak force), and stronger forces such as electromagnetisim. There is so much in quantum physics that remains in the realm of theoretical, and physicists are looking to find ways to take those things from the realm of the theoretical into the realm of the observed. The LHC is one way to do this. But just in case - it's been nice knowing you all.

What exactly is the purpose of the experiment, anyways? doe, a deer, a female deer..... ;D To split atoms and figure out a bunch of stuff. What NoWhammies said. I agree, Icon, as I looked at the pics I thought of the massive collaborative effort of scientific minds the world over to bring this about.

The major experiment, you know, the one that's supposed to turn the world inside out, isn't even being run today.
If you're curious about how the fringe is reacting to CERN, Wednesday night's (9/10) Coast to Coast AM will be discussing it.
