Remember you can live is SLC Utah and still not be LDS.....We don't have segregated cemeteries here.
So the assumption that this lady was LDS may not be a true assumption. But I do not know and I have no clue as to if she was a member or not. I will do some checking with the Genealogical Library records and see what I come up with.

So far what I found:
Her name is mis-spelled it should be: Lily Edith Gray Her Birth date is wrong it should be: June 4 1880
She was born in Ontario Cananda. But what has me thinking is one has to pay for the inscription. So why was their errors? and way pay for the added beast part???
SHe does not come up on any of the genealogical records. Which means 1) no one has done her genealogy and submitted it. 2) she may have been an old maid that moved to SLC by herself and had no descendents, and this could explain the errors. That no one was around to care about such things.
But it still brings me back to the curious inscription..... and why???

I'm questioning the fact that font is different in the lower inscription. You can tell from the number 6 and the letter V. Maybe someone came along one day and inscribed it.

With all of my grave yard stomping (I do genealogy) I have seen the mixed fonts on headstones. But you did notice something that was a little off and that is good!!
Okay I found that she married Elmer L Gray very late in life. He could possibly been involved with a crime and served 5 days for the theft of a $3.50 umbrella. Her name prior to marring Elmer was Zimmerman, but this could be her maiden name or a previous married name.
This mornings reading leads to me an educated guess that she possibly got involved with Crowley or his group in her latter years and that she somehow fell prey to him/cult. We do have a tendency to attract many "nut jobs" here so any thing is open to assumption.
When I was in high school we had a large group of Satan worshipers here up the Emigration canyon from SLC. And that was only only 16 years after her death. My personal feeling is that this was what she got involved with.

Very very good and commendable research Lit!
Although I still don't think Crowley was physically ever down that way, he certainly had followerers especially in the masonic lodge that exalted him, and she may have gotten mixed up in some group. Or another thought I had, is maybe she did something to upset one of these groups and the residences of Utah believed that she had been hexed or cursed by a group like this. Therefore falling victim to the beast.
Like you mention above, she may not have been affliated ever with the LDS church but a different church at one time.

that's weird the font is very different. her name and dates are more formal and the best part looks unformal and maybe more free hand like. very interesting...

i was lurking on the taps board again, muah haha and i found a thread about the number 666. I then went to this site to see what it says: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/06/060601211227.htmand it states that the number was as the grave says a vitim of the beast thing. but it says the beast isn't a thing its i guess a thought. it says that those who had this number or whatever had fallen off the christianity boat or were anti-christs. it was a way to show that they didn't believe or that they were "victim of the beast" which i think means they questioned their beliefs.

i was thinking again about this and i thought to myself. this isn't really common knowledge nowadays, before this thread i just though 666 was satans number. i feel like only someone who studies these types of things would know this. do them LDS have people who specialize in the study of satan or demonology?

I'm not sure lc, but I think it'd be interesting to research about epitaths, (sp?) and what they mean... or even research more into demonology. Hrm.... *adds yet another bunch of things to her list to study*
