I'm home alone during the day now that my kids are in school. I was back in the master bedroom just now when suddenly a door down the hall creaked open. Oh My GOD!!!
I went around checking all of the doors to see which one creaks- it's our main bathroom door. Just about two months ago, my daughter was in there when the wreath on the wall flew to her feet.
The cat was under my bed in the same room as me- that was my first culprit- but he was in the same room as ME. And the dogs are outside. crap crap crap!!!
I'm shaking a bit as I type... a lot freaked at the moment.

Investigating more- I see no reason why the door would move on it's own. The house is sealed, no open windows or doors- in fact, it was locked and I had the alarm on b/c I was in the shower right before then. It was bone quiet, no TV or radio was on. Out of nowhere, I heard the creeeeaak.
Geez!

Don't know what else to do, JJ. So, I will exalt you. Then all will be well again. Exalting solves all. LOL

Wow. I feel bad that your spooked and I know you well enough to say you heard what you claim. I'm glad your taking the time to search out other possible causes. Honestly, the idea of having activity in my home is not as cool as it would be in other venues.
Doors do not unlock themselves. Not being there, I can't really provide you with any advice to try and sway you either way. Where you go from here will depend entirely on your personal beliefs. If you need to talk, you know where to find me.

WOW!! Bet that was very scary!!
How long have you lived there? Was the door fully closed, or just "pulled together?" Do you have a video camera you could set up there?

Sometimes when my AC kicks on in the summer it will make my bedroom doors rattle. The pressure from the the sudden influx of air has upon occasion made a door not quite closed open on its own. Maybe that's what happened?

The thermostat is set on 80 and it was 78 at the time it happened- so it was cool enough in the house that it hadn't gone off yet. I am really thankful to Foz and CougarBob who were in chat and helped me keep my mind off the fear and feeling alone. Thanks guys!
I cannot find an answer to it just yet- no A/C, the doors and windows were all shut and the alarm was on- it will only go on if everything is shut, otherwise it advises me. So, no drafts, no A/C, no earthquake- I even checked into that! The door is hinged well, our humidity never goes above 9% here in the Mojave, so no expansion or contraction. I went back through the home and opened/shut all the doors to listen for creaks- that is the only door in the home that does it. Period. Middle of the house. Very odd.
I'm stumped- and will post a video recorder in the bathroom to see if it catches anything. Only one other thing happened in this room and it was months ago to my daughter, so, it's worth investigating further and seeing what might pan out.
If anything happens, you all will be the first to know!

I lived in a place that had weird stuff happen like that (including a faucet that turned on in the middle of the night one night and something that would make my bed sort of depress and then whisper "I love you" in my ear in the middle of the night). It can be a bit frightening.

I haven't experienced anything potentially paranormal in years. I'm more than a little jealous. But I'm also glad you're safe.

JJ, I still can't figure out what was causing the sound. The door was closed and latched, yet it made the creaking sound of slowly opening or closing. The humidity of the California desert is so low that wood expanding/contracting is probably not the answer. And, the fact that your dogs and cat ignored the sound tells me that is it something they hear all the time.
The only other thing that comes to mind is that it might have been a different sound from a different place than what you thought it was. Maybe the video camera will produce some evidence. Meanwhile, I don't think you are in any danger. Just keep an eye on the dogs. Roscoe (the wonder dog)'s hearing is probably the best. He may not overtly react to a sound, but he may following it by cocking an ear. I would keep an eye on him.

What I've decided to do today, besides turn on the TV so I don't feel so creeped out and alone, is deliberately put the door in the closed position. But, I'm not going to latch it shut. I have the video camera trained on it from the inside of the bathroom- it's quieter in there and it will most definitely catch anything that would happen. When I told my husband what happened, he just laughed and told me I watch too many of those shows. I got kinda pissed- watching ghost hunting shows does not result in doors creaking open on their own! Sheesh!

My hubby is a doubter, too. There was a period of about a week after my grandfather had died three years ago where the lights in the house were going on and off by themselves, and I could actually hear the rocker switch click - but there was no one there to click it. My hubby said it must be an electrical issue. An electrical issue that occurred for just that one week starting with my grandfather's death, and ending when I had a dream and he told me he was moving on. Plus, that electrical problem has never happened again, so it resolved itself somehow. I'm skeptical, too, and I look for logical explanations, but sometimes you just have to wonder.

Sheesh! Good job. Catch those ghosts and slap the taste out of their mouths. Sneaky intruders. Who invited them?
I'd be pissed too. Ghost Hunting shows help prepare you. They don't make the doors creak.

Whenever something happened at my parents house, my father would always blame scary movies and paranormal shows. I understand where you are coming from, he was a biiiig skeptic until something happened to him finally. Now he doesn't even come near to touching the subject. I'm figuring what happened to him shocked him enough to not doubt me, or what my mother had told him, anymore.
It is interesting that people will blame tv shows or movies for what goes bump in the night in our households. As if they actually have the power to do these things, more often they are alluding to our "imagination" of the event happening. Even faced with evidence some can be a little thick headed. Hang in there JJ, you may not catch anything, but inside you know what happened, and know that you're not alone in experiencing the unexplained.
