I ask this because this is being seriously considered for school curriculum out in CA right now. For those who do not quite know what Ebonics is, it is basically slang that has developed especially among African American's in urban locations. Examples of ebonics.. members.aol.com/tommydamac/ebonics.htmAnd article below: Does Ebonics belong in the curriculum? 'Situation' host Carlson and 'Outsider' Kellerman discuss merits of language Ebonics may become part of the curriculum in a California school district in efforts to boost test scores among African American students. On Monday’s “Outsider” segment, Max Kellerman, ESPN Radio Host, and ‘Situation’ host Tucker Carlson discussed the pros and cons of how the course could potentially help African Americans succeed better academically. Well, as a group, black students performed the worst among racial groups in the San Bernardino School District in California. So a sociologist from the University of California now says Ebonics, basically the codified version of African-American dialect, should be incorporated in the curriculum for black students to help them remain interested in school and to perform better. A trial Ebonics is already in place in two San Bernardino schools. Now, look, the point is—you know—you can mimic of all sorts of dialects, accents, Spanish and French, but you wouldn't mimic Ebonics. Why? Because it's associated with failure. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8628930/

All I have to say is NO, no no no no no no no no nnnnnnoooooooooo
Our teens are already killing their grammar and writing skills with text writing. It drives me crazy. Everyone should be taught proper English. Just like in other countries there is the proper way to speak the language and then dialects. I think we should get more diversity but not Ebonics. That's like teaching someone in New England how to talk like they're southern. It doesn't make sense and really does it help them? Not really.

That's how I feel or like teaching hillbilly language as a different language. Not to mention it sets these kids up to fail in life. Would they wind up being able to get a serious career by being shown that Ebonics is an appropriate accepted language. I don't care what kind of work a person is trying to enter, you have strong English skills and that takes you far in life no matter what you choose for a career path.

Next we should teach emoticons and chat speak. lol, lmao, roflmao, ...not really at all. I want to gouge out my brains through a small whole slowly as to make it more memorable and painful when I hear about teaching ebonics in school. Kids should learn how to speak, read, and right before the allow them to take lingual short cuts. If you teach them the short cuts first they are Doomed.

Ridiculous, why is catering to *some* black/latino people because they are too darn lazy to learn English correctly.

I guess this sorta goes with LCs answer. Teens today already speak the worst grammar than can be imaginable and now add ebonics as the norm? Does that mean the parents have to go learn ebonics? The schools have never taught aint as an exeptable slang even though it made the dictionary. So my vote is a great big NO.
