Ghost Adventures - 11/7/08 - Riddle House, West Palm Beach, Florida
The Ghost Adventures crew traveled to the Riddle House at Yesteryear Village in West Palm Beach, Florida.
History - The home was built in 1905 and was originally referred to as the Gatekeeper's Cottage because the inhabitants were the caretakers for the cemetery across the street. Karl Riddle became the first City Manager and Superintendent of Public Works in the 1920's and moved into the home. The home originally sat on Acacia Road until it was moved to Yesteryear Village (along with some other historic buildings) in 1998 due to the threat of demolition.
Reported Hauntings - The most prevalent haunting is by a man named Joseph who hung himself in the attic. He is said to throw things at people and move ladders during the night (he climbed a ladder to hang himself).
When the house was unveiled after being moved and renovated, a couple in Victorian clothing appeared at the ceremony. They later disappeared, then someone noticed the same couple was in an old photograph of the house that was on display.
People have also reported having their hair tugged, seeing items moved and seeing people move by the windows in the middle of the night. The ghosts in the house apparently do not like the American flag - flags have disappeared and been moved over the years.
Other buildings in Yesteryear Village also have reported hauntings.
The Investigation - This was the first overnight paranormal investigation ever conducted at the Riddle Hosue. The team began by taking two tours of the house, one with the curator of Yesteryear Village, Jennifer Irsay, and one with a psychic medium, Sheila Powell. This was their first experience using a psychic and they were interested to see how her impressions of the home matched with what the curator said. The psychic quickly picked up on a very angry spirit named Joseph (the man who had hung himself). His presence was especially strong in the attic and Sheila said that Joseph did not like men and really disliked Aaron, the team's tech person. They also took the psychic to the cemetery to see if she could pinpoint the original location of the home and it appears that she accurately did so.
Activity began shortly after lockdown started. As the team was getting the equipment ready, they claimed to hear the front door (which was bolted shut) slam, then heard footsteps going up the stairs and into the nursery above.
Earlier Zac, the team's lead investigator, placed a 2x4 on the stairs because one had been reportedly thrown from there. The board was clearly heard moving and when the team turned their cameras on it, the board had slid down towards the next step. While they were observing the board, a sound was heard from behind them. A flag that had been propped in the corner of the parlor had fallen. The team attempted to debunk the flag falling but were unsuccessful - the position of the flag can be seen during the video of the tour and team is unsure of how it fell in the direction that it did from that position. Cold spots were felt during these occurrences but no unusual EMF spikes were seen.
As the team headed towards the attic, Zac felt a cold spot and measured the air temperature around him at 69° when the temperature of the house had been consistently in the mid to high 80's. In the attic, Zac attempted to provoke the spirit for EVP's then hung a noose from the rafters before leaving Aaron up there alone.
Zac and Nick continued to investigate downstairs in the parlor while Aaron did an EVP session in the attic. Zac and Nick heard a loud bang from the kitchen and, upon investigating, found nothing to explain the noise but placed a static night vision camera in the kitchen. Nick heard footsteps on the stairs then moments later Aaron began yelling from the attic. Upon review of the video, a bird cage in the corner behind Aaron is clearly seen falling off a table. When another sound was heard from downstairs (and caught on the camera in the kitchen), the team placed 4 more static night vision cameras throughout the house. An EVP was caught in the nursery on a gold barillium microphone that sounds like a child's voice.
Overall, it was an interesting investigation. The flag falling was baffling because the only way for the flag to fall the way it did would be for someone to move it, but none of the team members were near it when it fell. The birdcage falling could possibly be explained by the fact that the house is old and may have loose floor boards - Aaron may have moved and caused something to shift by stepping on a loose board.
