Ghost Adventures - 11/14/08 - Sloss Furnace; Birmingham, Alabama
The Ghost Adventures crew traveled to the Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, Alabama.
History - The Sloss Furnaces began operation in 1882, after the Civil War created a huge need for jobs for the freed slaves. James Withers Sloss began building the furnace in 1881 to produce pig iron from the area's mineral resources. The facility was modernized in the 1920's and remained a prominent iron producer until 1971.
The furnace has a history of violent deaths due the dangerous equipment. Workers have been burned by fire and steam, crushed, fallen from the furnace towers after inhaling carbon monoxide fumes from the furnace and possibly even murdered.
Reported Hauntings - There have been reports of gray and black figures in many areas of the furnaces. Footsteps and voices are commonly heard.
The apparition of a former foreman, James Wormwood, nicknamed Slag, has been seen. It is believed that he was pushed from the top of one of the furnaces after his workers decided they had had enough of his demanding and sadistic ways. This apparition may even be responsible for attacking a person. The night watchman saw a black figure about 30 feet from him one night. The figure was suddenly right in front of him and the watchman reported feeling the figure reach into his chest and squeeze the air from his lungs. The watchman then heard a voice in his head say "Get out!"
A local paranormal investigator, Kevan Walden, reported sitting in the boiler room and losing power on both his recorder and camera. He was then slapped across the face. A fellow investigator said a handprint was visible across Kevan's face.
The Investigation - While preparing for the investigation, Zak witnessed a man walk past a doorway. The apparition appeared to be wearing a white t-shirt and blue overalls, the typical attire of a furnace worker. Footsteps were heard shortly after this sighting.
The team ventured down into one of the tunnels and heard a child's voice, which was picked up on Aaron's main camera, further down the tunnel. Aaron felt something hit him hard in the eye in the tunnel, but neither Zak or Nick were close to him. Moments later, Aaron heard footsteps behind him.
The investigation then moved above ground and a static night vision camera was positioned to view one of the towers while the team proceeded to investigate the grounds. Zak and Nick saw a strange glow and movement along the railroad tracks. The glow was caught on camera. The team was unable to find anything reflective or any animals in the area where the glow came from. A static night vision camera was placed along the railroad tracks. This camera caught a strange mist manifesting and the sound of hammering on metal.
The team decided to experiment with a thermal imaging camera in the boiler room area while doing an EVP session. They attempted to provoke the spirit because this was the area where another paranormal investigator was slapped. Unexplained metallic bangings were heard multiple times. Aaron saw something move behind Nick but was unable to catch anything on camera.
Because of the size of the facility and because so many of the previous paranormal encounters had occurred when a person was alone, the team decided to set up a main control area with Aaron manning the monitors, Zak going to the boiler room and Nick to the tunnel. Zak attempted to provoke in the boiler room while Nick did an EVP session in the tunnel.
Nick heard strange sounds behind him and caught a voice possibly saying "I hate Zak". He also caught a strange EVP of a man screaming. Nick heard a voice behind him say "Come on" and he began moving down the tunnel. He tripped and Aaron went to check on him. The static night vision camera caught a dark mist-like shape moving behind where Nick had been sitting.
Zak heard metallic sounds and thuds in the boiler room, then started getting cold chills. He then caught an EVP saying "Come here". Aaron told Zak that he might have seen something on the monitors but was unsure if his eyes were playing tricks on him.
The team took their evidence to Temecula, CA to be examined by a group called PIMPS, the Paranormal Investigations and Mysterious Phenomena Squad (yes, that is their name). Bill Tolley, the lead investigator of PIMPS (hehe), helped clean up some of the EVP's, including the one Nick caught that sounded like "I hate Zak". Bill was also able to clean up the mist caught in the tunnel and, by changing the color, the figure was easily visible.
Personally, I did not hear the EVP saying "I hate Zak". There was dripping and running water in the tunnel, so to me it seemed to be "sound matrixing". I also did not read too much into the thuds and metallic sounds being heard because the structures are old and decrepit. The couple mists caught by the static night vision cameras were interesting, especially the one caught outside. This episode was worth watching just to find out that there really is a paranormal group called PIMPS.
