Ghost Adventures - 11/28/08 - Edinburgh Vaults; Edinburgh, Scotland
The Ghost Adventures crew travels to Edinburgh, Scotland to investigate the Edinburgh Vaults.
History - The South Bridge in Edinburgh was built in 1788 to span the valley between the two parts of Edinburgh. Chambers were built in to the bridge structure. The original stores were high-end shops but they were replaced by "social businesses" such as gambling halls. A large amount of Irish people came to Scotland after the famine in the 1840's. They couldn't afford the houses in the area so they lived in the slums under the bridge.
Body snatching was a lucrative business. People would take bodies from the graveyard near the vaults then hide them in the vaults until they could be delivered to the medical school nearby.
The bridge itself is said to be cursed. The woman who was supposed to christen the bridge died 7 days before the bridge opened. Her casket was pushed over the bridge. People believe this is the cause of the criminal activities and deaths that occurred here.
The vaults were filled in by the business owners after the criminals left. The owners didn't want to use the vaults or to have other people use them either. In 1988, a shop owner crawled under his building and discovered the vaults.
Reported Hauntings - The cobbler's room is said to have a malevolent female spirit who has a vendetta against pregnant women. Psychics have sensed that this woman lost a child. A pregnant tour guide experienced violent sickness after entering this room on 3 occassions. The cobbler has also been seen in this room smiling at people.
The spirit of a friendly little boy called Jack has been seen. Psychics say this boy may have gone missing in 1810. The little boy holds people's hands, tugs on coats and throws stones.
The most evil spirit in the vaults is known as Mr. Boots because of his large black boots. He may have been a slumlord in the 19th century. This man shouts "get out" quite often when he feels that people are trespassing in certain areas. The body of a woman was found in one of these rooms after the vaults were discovered. A woman reported being pushed violently in one of these areas and witnesses say her face was somehow distorted. Mr. Boots is said to go berzerk if light hits his face.
There are even reports of a ghost dog. People feel the dog rub against them then hear the dog walking away.
Nearby Grey Friar Cemetery is said to be the world's most haunted cemetery. A young man who was touring there felt a burning feeling in his chest, he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. A homeless man broke into the vault of George Mackenzie and reported piles of skin and bones. He was attacked by a black figure as well.
The Investigation - While touring Mr. Boots' room, Nick believed he saw a man walk by. Zak had just finished telling Mr. Boots that the crew would be staying there all night. In the cobbler's room, Aaron's camera became very blurry and had a strange glow around everything. The camera then turned off.
Upon entering the vaults for lockdown, Aaron heard a scuffling sound ahead of him. Zak began by attempting to provoke Mr. Boots by talking and shining a flashlight around the room. Nick felt something like fingers brush against his hair multiple times. Noises were heard so the team got out the EMF detector. Huge EMF spikes occurred and Nick and Zak both felt like they were being touched. A large orb was caught on video at this time.
Zak decided to sit in Mr. Boots room by himself, while Nick and Aaron continued to investigate other areas. Zak conducted an EVP session asking provoking questions while sitting where the woman's body was found. He felt very uncomfortable in this room and kept feeling cold blasts of air. A scratching noise was heard on the wall right next to Zak like a rock had hit the wall.
Nick and Aaron heard dragging sounds in a hallway but had no other experiences before rejoining Zak.
The team went back to Mr. Boots room to see if they could get the scratching noise to happen again by shining the flashlight in there. However the team got distracted before by strange sounds. Over a six minute time period, sounds were heard like a sawing or dragging noise. They tried to follow the sounds and ended up in the cobbler's room. They asked questions of the cobbler but picked up an EVP of a female voice. They went to the side of the room where the female spirit had been seen. A knocking sound was heard when the team asked if the woman hated pregnant women. They asked again and heard another knock. The knock seemed to come from the next vault over, called the White Room.
Aaron stayed in the White Room. He heard the sound of a dog yelping or whining - the dog's spirit is said to be in this room.
The team decided to use trigger items to see if anything could be caught on static night vision cameras. EMF detectors were also placed in the rooms. A teddy bear was placed in the White Room where the child is seen. The teddy bear was seen moving slightly, at the same time the EMF spiked. Shortly after, the audio caught the sound of a child.
This was a very interesting episode but I have a few problems with the evidence personally. I would be curious to know if sounds from the buildings above the vaults can echo through the vaults. This may explain any auditory phenomena. The dragging/sawing sound had a very echo-y quality to it. I was also surprised that the team did not have the video of the teddy bear moving analyzed by an outside party to prove that nothing was rigged to move it.
