Ghost Adventures 12/5/08 Episode - Old Idaho Penitentiary; Boise, Idaho
The Ghost Adventures crew traveled to Boise, Idaho to investigate the Old Idaho Penitentiary.
History - Construction of the penitentiary began around 1870 and it started as a one-cell jailhouse, required for Idaho to obtain statehood. Most of the buildings were constructed by the inmates from local sandstone. Over 13,000 prisoners have been held here and 10 out of 11 executions in the state of Idaho were performed here.
Murders were commonplace. An inmate was even gang-raped to death in the showers. The team placed an X here for a night vision camera during their tour. Inmates often went insane and committed suicide in solitary confinement.
The last man executed at the prison, Raymond Allen Snowden, was known as "Idaho's Jack the Ripper". He was hanged on Oct. 18, 1957. The noose did not break his neck and it took about 15 minutes for him to strangle to death. Before being incarcerated, Snowden went to a bar and met a woman named Cora Dean, who he stabbed 35 times with a 2.5 inch pocket knife. The knife was found at a local cigar shop. Both the bar and cigar shop report hauntings.
The prison population was moved after riots in 1971 and 1973. The Old Idaho Penitentiary was officially closed on Dec. 3, 1973.
Reported Hauntings - An eyewitness reported hearing sounds like plumbers working on the pipes - there is no plumbing in the area she was in. She also reported reaching into a cell to try to grab a photo that was sitting in there and felt fingers in her hair. Another woman reported being pushed aggressively.
A news crew was shooting in a rose garden at the prison with a paranormal team. A member of the news crew felt pressure on his head. A photo taken before and during the man's ordeal had large orbs in them. The team placed an X at the spot were this occurred to set up a static night vision camera later. This rose garden was the original home of the gallows. People would gather on a hill outside the prison and watch the hangings.
Employees report strange occurrences as well. One man, who is the last employee to leave and the first to arrive at the prison, reported a sliding door lock being engaged from the inside, which is impossible since no one should have been in the building. He also reports the breaker box being tampered with.
Another employee was giving a tour of the gallows area, when a loud bang sound reverberated through the building. It was the sound of the main door to the building slamming shut.
Investigation - Shortly after the investigation began, Zak heard a noise from the rose garden. He said it sounded like screams and laughter, but by the time they arrived in the rose garden, they could no longer hear the sounds.
The crew went to the shower area where the inmate was gang-raped. They were planning to leave Aaron in the showers when they heard noises. Aaron had a water bottle in his back pocket and he felt it lift up. As this happened, a shadow was caught on video passing behind Aaron. He saw it and turned around. Zak and Nick left while Aaron continued to do an EVP session in the shower. Aaron did not get any evidence but did feel uncomfortable in the area.
Zak and Nick proceeded to the high security cell block and attempted to provoke the spirits to make noise. They had no luck, so they got Aaron from the showers and proceeded to solitary confinement to set up a static night vision camera. Zak and Aaron continued to set up the rest of the static night vision cameras.
Nick was left in solitary by himself. As he was threatening the inmates with 24 hour lockdown, he caught an EVP that sounds vaguely like a man's voice saying "Hey say what?". After Nick left to go to "the Hole", the night vision camera picked up three bangs that sounded like doors slamming. A door in "the Hole" that had been shut earlier but was open when Nick went in there. He heard a knocking sound behind him and caught a voice on his recorder at the same time.
The crew went to the death row cells and gallows where Raymond Allen Snowden had been executed. Zak stayed in this area by himself. Zak attempted to provoke Snowden with a noose. He felt a sensation on his arm that moved towards his shoulder and he was chilled. At the same time, an infrared digital still camera caught a misty shadow behind Zak. There was only one light source in the room so the team ruled out Zak's shadow since his shadow can be seen going the other direction. Zak hung a noose in the gallows and saw a shadow move in front of him.
Nick and Aaron walked through cell block 3 and set up motion sensors. They heard footsteps above them while doing this. They left the motion sensors there and regrouped in the rose garden.
The team snapped photos while Zak provoked the spirits in the rose garden. Aaron's photos showed a large white ball of light which proved to be just dust or a bug.
The crew decided to experiment with a technique called ITC, instrumental trans-communication, in the Death Row area. This method tries to catch ghost pictures on electronic devices. They set up a TV with a digital video camera about three feet away. The audio-visual jacks were connected from the camera to the TV. The team recorded 30 seconds of video at a time after calling out to the ghosts, then analyzed each section. A dark silhouette with what appeared to be a hood was captured - Raymond Allen Snowden had a hood put over his head before being hanged.
The team went to Reno to have their EVP's analyzed by Mark and Debbie Constantino. Debbie heard "not my life" and "I'm ok" in two different voices from the recording from "the Hole". Mark reviewed the ITC evidence and said the image caught was considered a "holographic image" since it had very little detail and was not a full-body image.
Once again, another interesting show from the Ghost Adventures crew. The sound that Zak heard in the rose garden is barely audible on the video. However, to me, it sounds like coyotes howling off in the distance. The shadow behind Aaron is not overly exciting since it is barely visible. The ITC technique is an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how verifiable I find the image. With the other colors and images that appeared, the silhouette could simply be coincidence.
