This is probably one of the most historical hauntings in USA history. It's alledged that this specter actually caused a death but who knows. What are your views on this? Was there actually a ghost? Several ghosts? A poltergeist or the product of a dysfunctional family or trouble family member? Perhaps a sinister charlton whom fancied the affected daughter? For those unfamiliar with this legend, here is a link that gives a very good summary of what the Bell Witch is about and the details surrounding it. www.bellwitch.org/story.htm

Ok , I watched American haunting and I was sooooo made! I was so freaked out in the end becuase I never read about the Bell witch before hand. The way the movie read, you would think that the ghost was just teh molested daughter who was warning mothers about their daughters (or so it seemed) almost like a helping assisting ghost. Not a malicous one. But then again , I am going to click on the link and see what that says. Cause I know movies and writings are usually completely different.

Ok I read that. Hmmmmm, I dont know. I still beleive ghosts dont just show up one day without warning. I think they have to be provoked somehow. What do you guys think bout this ? I still think with a haunting there has to be a connection from the entity and the place or family involved.

Well I tend to lean towards the idea of the school teacher that was much older than the daughter being the possible culprit. It seems very suspicious to me how soon as the Betsy broke off her engagment with Josh, the torments she went through suddenly stopped. And the ghost telling her to dump him? Like why would any ghost really give a hoot about who she marries? This seems to me like the kind of thing that school teacher would want, rather than some random ghost. Also back then in the early to mid 1800s people were still very superstiticious and heck, even later into the 1800s people in RI actually believed that some unfortunate 19 year old girl that died of Tuburculosis was a vampire. So that tends to shed light on the mindsite of average folks from those times, and the possibility that things might have changed in this story from the actual events too.

You know , that story was completely different than the movie. And like you said, story lines change through the years as all urban legands do. Word of mouth is a scary unpredictable culprit. I do think the things that they mentioned as "hauntings" to the Bell family was infact someone involved. Maybe now a days its truely haunted from the poor Bell souls that were effected and died because of the effects. But I think in the Bell situation there really wasnt a haunting as much as something else going on , but its easier to blame something you cant prove to someone in opposed to blame a "popular" person of something so malicious. Same as these says, you want to get a someone screw with someone in high power, you better watch out for yourself cuase its not going to turn out well in the end.

Good points! Too bad there wasn't a way to view back in time some how to be able to see exactly what was taking place there! To me the claims just seem extremely extreme. I think that John Bell most likely passed away from bad medicine, he was very sick and it was common back then for people to die, with or without medicine and sometimes the medicine did more harm than good. In the end, Betsy wound up marrying that school teacher and he died of a stroke in 1848, leaving her to endure a very long widowhood, as she lived on until 1888.

Great story. But they ruined it when they made it into a movie.
