Lit had an idea for this topic. We each pick a haunting from the towns we live in or the towns we grew up in and research that haunting and post links and pics of that haunting or paranormal event there.

FREETOWN STATE FORESTFreetown's place in Massachusetts folklore and paranormal history is quickly becoming as famous as its coastal sisters and metro cousins. As more stories come out that focus on that part of the state, the more people will turn their heads to what is happening there and how the history of this rural town is both a black mark on who we are and a warning from what are actions might bring about. Freetown has a higher than average number of hauntings. Most are of the harmless variety. For example, there is a rumor of a ghost that haunts the police station there. It seems a dispatcher died on night while on duty. Although she was the main lifeline of the building at night, her presence was not missed until the morning. Police on duty patrolling the streets and driving around just assumed it was a slow night. They arrived hours later at shift change to find her body. Since then several officers have come forward with descriptions of a cloudy figure walking through the office. While there is no further description of the ghost, it did not appear until after the dispatchers death and most of the officers attribute it to her. The real hauntings of the town generate from the state forest there, the largest in the state. The forest is 5,441acres (about 15 square miles) and lies in a town of little more then 30 square miles with only 10,000 citizens. The majority is dedicated to a forest reserve and the Wampanoag reservation which has open tribal meetings and acts as a meeting ground of different tribes. It seems to attract negative energy from other parts of the state and draw it in, becoming the lightning rod for cults in the area and a symbol of the tension between current residents and the natives that once lived there. In 1978, one day before he was set to get married, 32 year-old James Kater kidnapped 15 year-old Mary Lou Arruda and eventually killed her. Her body was found bound to a tree. In 1983, a newborn baby was found dumped in a trashcan at a rest stop along the highway that borders the forest. In 1987, a drifter from a nearby town was found dead in the forest. In 1988 two men were shot multiple times and killed during a dispute over a girl and a body was dug up from one of the cemeteries nearby. In 1998 a boy was found naked and beaten and there were several mutilated cows found that were linked by local police to a cult. Perhaps the most famous case involving the forest revolved around a local pimp and the killing of several local prostitutes. In the late seventies and early eighties Carl Drew ran his business out of Fall River and was implicated in the murder of at least three women under him. One of the victims was dumped in the forest and the initial investigation pointed to more cult activity. Several witness stepped forward saying Drew was the leader of a satanic cult and that the killings had been part of his need for human sacrifice. They also said they had witnessed Black Masses in the forest led by Drew. He was eventually found guilty and still remains in jail. In recent months his case has been reopened and the witnesses against him claim they had been forced by the police to testify against him and that no Satanic activity had ever happened. And clips of some eerie stuff on that article... There are paths through part sof the forests that are large enough for a car, but people have learned not to drive them at night. One person traveling through kept seeing glimpses outside the window as he winded through the forest. Speeding up, he saw a dark figure step out of the forest and keep up with his car with little effort and then disappear. Other cars have been known to break down or have their lights mysteriously go out. One group of people was walking the road joking and having fun and saw a person walking towards them. They ran back to the car and saw an old woman coming straight for them like a zombie. She was covered in dirt like she has been buried and walked up the car and tried to reach in. Full article... www.masscrossroads.com/bristolfreetownOther stuff I've heard about is UFOs there, as well as bloodied up stab victims running out of there to houses nearby for help in the morning. My personal experience is that one time my brother were cruising around and wound up on those dirt roads through the forest late at night. The roads were sooo bad that in a car, we had to creep slowly through it to try to get out of there. Only problem was it was like a maze and seemed like we'd never get out. We were merry and jolly and laughing about it at first and then things got weird. First as we were trying to find out way out, we took a turn and almost wound up in a crator. Then we saw a truck drive by and go down this road, and since it had 4 wheel drive it could handle the roads with ease. We decided that maybe we should follow it, assuming that it was just passing through and could lead us the way out. It wound up out of our sight but when we finally caught up to it, it was pulled over to the side of the road, with two people dragging something out into the woods with a flash light. At that point it was no longer so funny anymore to us as the reality of being out in the middle of a deep dark forest with potentially shady people in a truck crept into our thoughts. So we spent the rest of the time trying to creep on out of there as well as worrying about whether or not we are going to suddenly see the head lights of that truck come into view and catch up to us. Needless to say that was not a very fun feeling out there from that point on. Finally we got out of there. Another weird thing was that some of our electrone things like the GPS had a malfunction while we were in there.

Heres. Mine The McRaven house. Its one of the oldest homes in Vicksburg. It was built in 3 phases. And is a great place to see. Only problem is its not the safest place in town. www.geniecorner.com/HTML/McRaven.htmlheres a Youtube link. youtube.com/watch?v=vriAXEpMXAg&feature=relatedAlso there are a number of houses not as famous. The siege of Vicksburg left a number of places haunted. The military park. The convent of the sisters of mercy. I spent 6 years there in elementery school. Enjoy the links.

I don't think I'll be investigating, abut I've taken the kids here many times (when they were kids), and they have "Ghost Tours" and parties, especially around Halloween. But no one I know has ever seen or heard anything, and most believe the story is just old legend with no basis in any documentable fact... ***** Extracted from Web Site***** The story of Old Fort Niagara castle. The French built Old Fort Niagara Castle in 1726. Many ghostly apparitions dot the halls and rooms of this ancient castle. Many have reported seeing candles that are lighten by unseen hands, ghostly shapes without faces, and even a few German shepherd ghosts howling at the moon. Here everyone that visits accepts all these occurrences as normal day-to-day life. The castle has four floors and on a clear night, you can see the lights of Toronto Canada across the Niagara River. From almost ever corner you can hear the waves beating the shore to give more sound to the spookiness that abounds in doors. The most popular legendary ghost that haunts Old Fort Niagara Castle is the headless ghost. The headless ghost first began to appear in the 1830’s. As the tale goes, a French officer during a duel lost his head. His body was thrown into the mysterious well. On nights of a full moon, his headless body roams the castle in search of his head. The chapel is also an eerie place late at night; here heavy benches that are not there are heard being dragged about. Not a great place if you wish to get some quiet and peaceful sleep. The chapel is one room that a criminal could hide for years, since police dogs will not enter. Not too many people are really brave enough to spend a night or two in Old Fort Niagara since it is on the list of one of the most haunted places in Western New York. Eerie and creepy sounds, bumps in the nights, lights in the top floor window, and heavy footsteps should be enough to keep those ghost hunters away and allow the spirits to rest in peace. If you ever get to MA, make a pit stop at John Stone's Tavern in Ashland. www.stonespublichouse.com/This place is alledgedly haunted by two poor souls that lost their lives on the railroad tracks; one being a 10 year old girl by the name of Mary Smith who'd bloodied 1800s dress still remains up in the attic. Moreover John Stone himself is alledge to haunt the place. The type of ghost activity reported: 10 Year old Mary Smith: Has startled patrons by peering out the windows of the storage room near the kitchen as well as haunting the attic where her tattered dress still remains. Burt Phillips: The other casuality of the trains pulls practical jokes in the tavern. He turns on faucets and taps patrons on the shoulders. John Stone: Tries to choke people, throws glasses everywhere or knocks them off of shelves as well as leaving extra money in the tip jars. It is important to know that TAPS had done an investigation at this site too.

Portland Oregon
Today, Portland, Oregon is known as a liberal, humble, Victorian-refined city, the beautiful “City of Roses.” But, from 1850 to 1941, Portland was one of the most dangerous places to be in the world, particularly for women. It was known as the “Forbidden City” or the “Unheavenly City” due to the alarming practice of shanghaiing. A large network of dark tunnels lays half-buried beneath the streets of Portland, stretching from the North End (modern day Old Town, Skidmore Fountain, and Chinatown) all the way down to the South End (today’s southwest downtown area). Can you imagine being kidnapped, knocked out, and then waking up many hours later on a ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, being forced to perform slave work for sailors? Most victims were able-bodied men, good for slave labor, but women were also grabbed and dragged through the tunnels, where they were sold as slaves or forced into prostitution. If you survived, it would take about six years to return to Portland, but women rarely were seen again. There are regular tours of the Shanghai tunnels (lesser known as the Portland Underground). The main one is the “Heritage Tour,” focused on the practice of shanghaiing itself. Another is the “Ghost Tour,” about the haunts and ghosts in the Portland Underground. The Shanghai Tunnels are proclaimed to be the most haunted place in Oregon, and possibly all along the West Coast. The “Ethnic History Tour” is about the background on the Chinese, Japanese, and Gypsy shanghaiiers.
Under of beautiful city of Portland lies a hidden world with shady secrets and mysteries waiting patiently to be solved. A lot of people try to cover up Portland’s shadowed past, for they are ashamed of the horrid reputation the City of Roses earned. But in truth, it is the future that is important, not the past. It matters not what happened in the past, but what is happening in the present and the future. We must look ahead to all of the things to come in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon.

The Lemp Mansion is one of the most well-known St. Louis haunted houses. It's a restaurant and b and b now and they also have ghost tours in the fall. Here's a link of several pages that goes into the history of the family and house as well as some readers experiences there, with photos: www.legendsofamerica.com/MO-LempMansion.htmlHere's another one for ghostly experiences at the Lemp: www.yourghoststories.com/real-ghost-story.php?story=75I've eaten there countless times, been to a wedding reception and toured the second floor (the bedrooms) and have never heard or felt anything. I've been there when it was extremely quiet too, nothing. I highly recommend the family style Sunday fried chicken dinners!!!
