Because quite a few of our discussions are on mediums and psychics I thought this question was relevant.

I said "maybe" because I don't think that there is anything that I can say is unequivocally impossible unless it has been absolutely proven so, and it is pretty darn difficult to prove a negative. That being said, I think evidence with all of the psychic mediums out there who appear to lean towards cheap parlor tricks like cold reading and mic'd audiences certainly have me leaning towards it being more improbable than probable. I'm a skeptical believer. I do believe that it is likely that the dead communicate. I just believe that it is probably a much more personal thing and subtle thing than communication through James van Praagh or Sylvia Browne playing of the emotions and vulnerabilities of someone who desperately wants to hear from a loved one.

I said maybe. I believe most of the mediums/psychics that go "public" so-to-speak are hacks who are just out to make a buck. They want publicity and don't care who they hurt in the process. But I do believe there may be people out there who are truly gifted in some ways. These people use their gifts to help people without the intent of becoming "famous".

No, and unfortunately have had first hand experience with some of these scumbags. Me too--been to Lilydale and been read there. Though a few interesting hits...and I am not a revealing subject--more of a pain in the hiney (original uncensored word ryhymes with grass)...the lady in question was very vague. At one point in time she thought that I should be a medium--this would be a scary thought indeed! I would be forced to submit myself to further testing... PGA

I voted "not likely" which isn't an absolute no. Leaves me some wiggle room. LOL I just have never seen anyone who came across as legit.

I used to be a medium, now I'm a large.
I voted "not likely" because it's really difficult (and usually unwise) to be absolute about anything, but I needed to be as close to "absolutely not, no way, can't happen" as I could...
Telling people they are "sensitive" and should be a medium must be one of the routine things mediums say. ALMOST everyone I know who has ever been to a medium has been told that.
Jason and Grant go to Lilydale every year. That's gotta tell you something.

I picked Don't know because I'm a bit torn on the subject.
I believe that it is possible that there are people out there who do possess this ability (I'm assuming we're talking about just talking to the dead and not any further ESP oriented abilities).
I also believe that the majority of people out their claiming to be mediums (as defined above) and us their "ability" for personal gain do not possess this ability. If you had to pin a number on this belief, I'd say 97% of people working as mediums do not have the ability.

I sometimes wonder if maybe some of the people who claim to be mediums may have started out being truthful about what they were experiencing, but in order to make a living they augmented what they were doing with cold reading and other parlor tricks. Eventually they become the Sylvia Brown's of the world, just existing to trick people out of thier money. I think that it might be possible to connect with something that connects us all, past and present. I don't think that very many of the people making a living at this sort of thing are authentic mediums.

I remember hearing a number of times that psychics can't use their abilities for personal gain (thus, they can't use their ability to get the lottery numbers). If that is the case, then isn't it possible that the moment their motivations move from helping people to making a living helping people, they lose contact with their abilities.
