That's insane. People that stupid should be shot before then can breed or worse ...run a school.

Wait! I see something... a psychic vision. Someone is going to lose their job (but it won't be the psychic).

Except that a whole bunch of people are going to lose their jobs. Again, it won't be the psychic. Why won't they give us the names of these psychics so we can post them and warn others to stay away?

Good job Canada. Just another reason NOT to emulate Canada.. I could just as easily go through the American news and find reasons why Canada shouldn't want to be like the US. Just look at the much higher percentage of handgun deaths in the US. I've lived in both countries, and I feel much safer in Canada. I know from experience that I would rather have my kid in a Canadian school, because of the better quality of education typically being offered here. My son had a lot of difficulty catching up in school after spending 3 years in the US. Canadian schools generally have much higher standards. We actually pay teachers a decent wage, and there is more emphasis on math than on sports. Yes, this particular school is being run by idiots. But I could probably find examples taking place in US schools where a school has actual evidence of child abuse and has done nothing to protect the child. Which is worse? The schools here are typically overzealous to protect the child because if they do nothing, they face strict penalties. Every country has its idiots. How would you feel if I categorized all Americans as being dumb, arrogant and rude? I've seen lots of tourists from the states that fit those stereotypes. I met lots like that when I lived there. But I know that there are many good people living in the US as well. Just as there are many sensible people working in the majority of Canadian schools.

To be honest, I have to doubt whether this story is true or not. I only say this because in the opening paragraph, the girl's name is Elizabeth. In the gray box, she's called Victoria. Hmmmm...

I wondered about that too. I've been looking through the Canadian news sites and can't find any mention of this story. It seems like something that would have been picked up. If I find anything out, I'll let you know.

Definitely let us know if you find anything. Thanks!

I'm sure they would want to clear the school's name if this is just another internet hoax.

Or maybe the merits of government school debate? I don't see this as any reflection of Canada at all, and think it is a fine country.

CTV news sent this link back to me: toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20080618/psychic_abuse_080618/20080618/?hub=TorontoNewHomeHere are a few important points to consider: "Under the Child and Family Services Act, anyone who works with children and has reasonable grounds to suspect a youngster is being harmed must report it immediately - and the CAS is obligated to follow up." "Officials at Terry Fox Elementary School then gave Leduc a list of behaviours exhibited by her daughter, which taken together with the report from the psychic, formed a theory of abuse." ""You have to keep in mind she has autism, and she's in pre-pubescence so she's developing, and she has no inhibitions," Leduc says, "so she's exhibiting behaviours that may be construed as sexual in nature in a social environment."" So it wasn't just a case of the school acting solely on the advice of a psychic. The child was behaving in ways that caused the girl's teaching assistant to be concerned. The teaching assistant probably believed the psychic because she had those concerns to begin with, and the Children's Aid Society probably would have investigated the complaint based on the teaching assistant's concerns without any imput from the psychic. Ultimately, the CAS erred on the side of caution, which is on the child's side.

I don't see this as any reflection of Canada at all, and think it is a fine country. No maleitch, I'm not looking to start the handgun debate. As was pointed out in "Bowling for Columbine", Canadians have more guns per person than Americans do. I really don't know why Canadians are less likely to use them on each other. Maybe because pointing at others is rude, and we Canucks are annoyingly polite. I'm just suggesting that to use this case as justification to insult Canada is silly. There are good things and bad things about every country. It really depends on what your goals and values are. I liked living in the States, but home is home, and I do feel safer here.

Another thing to remember, true in both the U.S. and Canada (and around the world for that matter), the media tends to report the portions of the story that make it the most interesting (read: sensational), with little regard for the truth, or the full and accurate story. We can probably risk giving Canada the benefit of the doubt unless/until it is shown they have more per capita freaks then we have in the U.S.
