How does everyone feel about this? Not letting heavy people fly or charging them extra. I saw this in skiffy and it sparked my memory and i thought it would be interesting to see how we feel about this here.
this is what i posted on the skiffy board and its how i feel so i didnt change it or add anything: just one more right the government wants to take from you.
the right to be fat is my own and if i want to fly and be fat at the same time i should be able to. i pay my taxes and i pay the outrageous prices for flights so i can see my family that i love a couple times a year. i understand about rising gas but again i will pay if i want to fly and in the end its all about the almighty dollar. and this is just out right discrimination.
...im not fat but i could sure as hell use some evercise. and for taller people they keep taking more and more leg room. why not pack us in boxes that are perfectly weighed and pop us on a plane. we could be shipped just like animals going to a zoo. it would be easier and cheaper.

Thats sad that the airlines are thinking of doing that! I would never in a million years pay more cause of my weight! The government now is just getting stupid! I hate how tax payers have to pay more to go outa state by plane. its enough they are raising gas prices and everything else in this world. but plane tickets cause of weight! They are even charging to check your bags! I will just travel with all my clothes on to save me cash!

I'm not saying it's right to charge people by weight, but I will say airlines already charged you if your bags were over a certain limit. When I was moving to Germany I had one bag that was over 75 lbs so they tagged me 150 bucks extra. That was back in 2002.

But to charge people to check there bags! its called privacy and I have a right to have it. And they are going against my rights doing it

How the heck are they going to know how much you weigh without weighing you? If they weigh you it is a invasion of privacy. Even at the doctors office no one sees your weight but the doctor and the nurse. I agree with Leigh and LC. This makes me angry because my sister is over weight and it bothers her alot. If she is to be charged by her weight she would never fly. Prices to fly are already so high it is stupid. I feel the airlines are going to lose alot of business. I dont have a weight issue but I will take the train before I will let the money hungry airlines will make me step on a scale.

i think people should be charged for their bags if theyre heavier. also they should cut down on f-ing annoying rolling carryons. they take up WAY TOO MUCH room and people with them are the reason it takes forever to get on and off a plane.
cut down on carry-ons. all i ever take is my small bookbag and a rolled up fleece blanket. i know airlines loose luggage and you have to wait to get it but everything could be a lot faster.
** forgot this, they already charge you an extra seat if youre big and cant fit into one. so why charge extra just for the weight too?

Sounds like a scam to me to get more money. I can see charging for 2 seats if you can't lower the armrest, but that's all.

I can see it now, you buy a round trip ticket to go see the folks at Christmas and you end up having to stay an additional two weeks to try and lose some weight because you cant afford to fly back. You just thought all the terrorists and added security was bad. Now it will be the dreaded "weigh-station" that causes everyone to flip out.

Piss poor effort. See the difference here is, to me anyway, there are big people, and there are fat people. Big people, no matter their size or weight still take pride in themselves and their appearance. fat people, dont give a flyingfuck. They will jump someone to first class if there is a seat and the person looks respectable. Now if a person gets on a plane who is big, then no matter the circumstances, leave them alone. If a fat sloth walks on, then you know that they are not going to care about themselves or the people around them. This is where big people are getting a flogging. Because of the humungous mongs who don't care, the big people are now going to have to suffer. I watch some of these f*****' mutants cruise wallmart in the electric chairs when I know damn well they can walk. Soon as these symps finish shopping, head to mickey dee's and grab 63 big mac's 4 french fries, 33 hash browns, a couple of sundae's and flush it all with a diet coke. When these fuckers sit down their clothes dissapear into the humungous rolls of fat. The pattern on the spandex pants is meant to be 2 inches across, not stretched to its limit and reaching 19 inches. You can be big and still be sexy, but it makes it damn hard when you are being put into the same category as the sloths. B.

I'm confused, isn't it the Airlines considering this? They are private agents, not government, and the government, as far as I know has made no laws concerning weight, yet some airlines (not all) have been considering upping the cost. The airlines argument is that some people are so over weight they take up two seats. So in that sense they think that a person who takes up two seats should have to pay for both. And of course they will always argue the fuel too. But do I agree? No I do not. As you and others pointed out, this seems like discrimination, and the tickets cost an arm and a leg as it is. Maybe they could take some of the money they use from jacked up ticket prices and equip their own planes with larger seats to accomodate larger people.

It will be interesting if these airlines all go bankrupt. If? What am I saying? WHEN these airlines go bankrupt. They were already on the edge before 9-11, now the higher fuel costs are going to wipe them out. They cut out meals, cut out snacks, I guess soft drinks are next. They cram the planes to overflow, then tell the poor people who can't get a seat, "Gee, you'll have to catch the next flight. We don't care what your plans were on the other end. We overbook every flight."
And, what burns me the most, if you've read the 9-11 report, the airlines have a great deal of the responsibility for 9-11. They're the ones that pressure the airports to lighten security to get people into the planes faster. Their pilots are the ones who opened the cockpit doors and let the terrorists in. In some cases, after they had been warned not to. Granted, no one to that point had ever hijacked a plane to use as a bomb. But they still get to own part of the responsibility. Read the report or watch the video version of it. It's an eye-opener.
What's next? We'll be paying for carry-on bags as well as checked luggage. Train and bus will be the main way people will travel soon. Planes will be only for overseas. IMO

when i say the gov't i mean that eventually the airlines will be taken over. they're going bellyup fast and to keep them alive the gov't agencies will have to step in. but maybe that would stop the fat thing because ive been given training on discrimination in the workplace and dealing with the public training. if anything that large(the airlines) even sort of smelled like discrimination i think they would fix fast.
flying is one of the most stressful things and i think if they add the weight business it will be horrible. and i go home every christmas, im sure after staying with my family for a week i wouldnt be able to get back on weighing the same.

Oh I see! Yes maybe then it will be equipped to better suit the needs of larger and/or much taller customers. Oh tell me about it. I detest the whole entire ordeal starting from going to the airport all the way to, until I am walking away from the airport. I get major anxiety going through the whole damn process and plus I don't like flying either, so I am nervous about that on top of it. And then you get stuffed into this less than comfortable seat and I hope to fall asleep before it takes off so that I don't have to experience the take off and the flight attendants refuse to give you one lousy little pillow until in flight which depletes the whole purpose.
