I remember when this first happened it was very upsetting to me that an adult would have been cruel enough to behave this way towards a 13 year old kid. LOS ANGELES (May 15) - A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Missouri woman for her alleged role in perpetrating a hoax on the online social network MySpace against a 13-year-old neighbor girl who then committed suicide. Megan Meier, 13, committed suicide in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages from a 16-year-old boy on MySpace.com. That boy, "Josh Evans," never really existed. He was allegedly fabricated by the mom of another girl who lived near Megan in suburban St. Louis. That woman, Lori Drew, was indicted Wednesday on federal charges. Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl. Drew allegedly helped create a MySpace account on false premises to contact Megan Meier, who thought she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans, who turned out not to exist. Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her. Omg, that is so wrong Why do people have to be that way? I mean it's hard enough being a teenager, let alone having to deal with sick people who MISuse the internet for their sick enjoyment!

Certainly makes me wonder what was she thinking? I hope she spends a lot of time in prison for that stunt! Maybe there she will get some brains and learn how to think!!!

i saw this and was very happy to hear that the mother would be puinished, she needs to take just as much blame for encouraging this horrible crap.
it disgusts me the way this woman acted toward a child because of her own bitter ideals.

I was following this when it first happened. At first they said she did nothing wrong and could not be indicted. I am so glad that they did indicte her. This woman was a mother and did something like that to a child. It is just awful.

I agree Deb, it really burns me what parents can do to kids... and there are loving people out there, who can't have kids....

Although that woman could not have known that the child was troubled to the point that she had suicidal tendencies, this to me doesn't renig her of her part in what led up to this death. But for HER actions, that child might have survived past that day and hopefully gotten help. What this is, is case of child abuse, not by a family member, but by a sick, reckless fool in the neighborhood. I am glad that the federal laws could find ways to hold her accountable.

This woman should have known having a teen of her own that they are very fragile. OK, I cannot wrap my head around why she did this. I am a mom and I always try to look out for kids. I would never set my sights on a child just to make them feel bad. She probably never thought this would happen but why would she want to emoitionally torment a young girl. What kind of person does this. I hope they throw the book at her. She will never get what she deserves though.

To me it is really not so relevant whether or not she could imagine the girl hanging herself as a result, but rather the cruelty and desire to inflict substancial amount of emotional pain on a 13 year old child. But for this reckless lack of regard for this child, the suicide would not have happened. For that, she deserves every bit of whatever punishment is handed down to her.

Exactly, people have to take responsibly for their actions and the results of those actions. I am so glad we have a thread on this topic it has bothered me since I first read about it. I saw my teenage son crushed by his first love. To him it was so real. I remember that feeling. I am sure this woman had some insight into what she was doing. So, I hope they make an example of her. I cannot imagine a jury going easy on her if there are any parents on the jury.

I cannot imagine a jury going easy on her if there are any parents on the jury. There is no doubt she had a pretty good idea of what she was doing, having a daughter of the same age herself. In fact she knew exactly the kinds of things to say that would be most devastating as possible to this girl. This case had also bothered me too and I felt like this idiot didn't seem remorseful or fathom what it was she did wrong. She can only be thankful and bless the earth that there wasn't some creature out there doing that to her own daughter.

She had no remorse. She and her husband both we interviewed and showed no remorse for what she did. I cannot fathom that kind of coldness. Adult develop relationships and feelings for others on the INTERNET. Teenagers are much more vulnerable. I don't know this whole thing just enrages me.
